Daily Mobility Digest, Oct 30, 2026: Medline exits the bed business; FDA Early Alert cites two deaths and 16 injuries
Medline is pulling every Medline Brand bed from the market as the FDA flags fire and entrapment risks, CMS starts prior authorization on eight more DMEPOS codes, and Permobil's M4 Nexa begins shipping November 1.
Medline told customers on October 14, 2026 that it is removing, discontinuing and exiting the market for all Medline Brand beds: homecare, bariatric and long-term care beds plus pendants, rails, mattresses, accessories and replacement parts. The FDA posted an Early Alert on October 29 citing fire risk from overheating electrical components and entrapment risk when beds are used with accessories; as of October 20, Medline had reported two deaths and 16 serious injuries. An October 24 update lets customers keep beds in use under revised instructions (unplugged except while repositioning a patient, no extension cords) until repair, replacement or a full or partial refund, with remedies covering items bought in the last five years. In an October 21 SEC filing, Medline put affected net sales at about $60 million for the twelve months ended June 27, 2026 and estimated total costs of up to $220 million.
Why it matters. Dealers and facilities that stock Medline beds need a replacement supplier and a plan for every bed already in the field, and the remedy each customer gets depends on purchase date.
CMS added eight HCPCS codes to the Required Prior Authorization List with a nationwide start date of October 28, 2026: K0005 (manual wheelchair base), E0194 (pressure reducing support surface), L1833 (knee orthosis) and L0456, L0457 and L0486 (thoracic lumbar sacral orthoses). Two upper limb orthosis codes, L3761 and L3916, phase in by state: California, Florida, Michigan and New York on October 28, 2026, then Arizona, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Texas on January 26, 2027, then nationwide on April 26, 2027. CMS announced the update in the Federal Register on July 30, 2026 (document 2026-15446); the codes already on the list are unchanged.
Why it matters. Suppliers billing K0005 chairs or these orthoses for dates of service on or after October 28 need an affirmed prior authorization decision on file before the claim pays.
Blue Arbor Technologies announced on October 28, 2026 that it closed a $10.5 million Series A round led by Ottobock, which the release calls its strategic partner. The Michigan company is developing the RESTORE neuromuscular interface, which connects a user's peripheral nervous system to a robotic prosthetic limb, first as an external sensing unit and later as a fully implantable unit. The funds go to feasibility studies, an FDA Investigational Device Exemption application for U.S. clinical studies of the external unit, and development of the implantable unit.
Why it matters. Ottobock is putting capital behind upper-limb control technology that is still pre-clearance, so O&P and complex-rehab providers should expect no product change in the near term.
Wandercraft announced on October 1, 2026 that it acquired Ekso Bionics, Inc. from a subsidiary of ChronoScale Holdings Corporation (Nasdaq: CHRN); terms were not disclosed and the deal signed and closed the same day. The release says Atalante X and EksoNR together are used at more than 700 rehabilitation centers worldwide, and Wandercraft intends to keep supporting both plus the Eve and Indego Personal home exoskeletons. It also notes that Medicare covers qualifying personal exoskeletons under the brace benefit category, billed under HCPCS code K1007, for individuals who meet eligibility and medical necessity requirements.
Why it matters. Rehab centers running either platform now have one vendor for service and clinical support, and one larger company advocating on K1007 reimbursement.
Permobil's M4 Nexa, a compact mid-wheel power wheelchair announced September 23, 2026, starts a phased launch on November 1, 2026 in Germany, France, Switzerland, the UK, Ireland and Australia, with further markets through 2027. Seat widths run 12 to 22 inches, seat depths 10 to 22 inches, seat-to-floor height goes as low as 15 inches, and the base measures 21.5 by 33.5 inches with a 21.1-inch turning radius. In the Americas, Permobil expects availability through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs after anticipated FDA 510(k) clearance (the release targeted early October 2026), with full U.S. and Canada commercial availability planned for January 2027.
Why it matters. Complex-rehab dealers serving adolescents and smaller adults get a full-power-seating option on a compact base, but U.S. orders outside the VA wait until January 2027.
A systematic review and meta-analysis published October 16, 2026 in Frontiers in Neurology pooled 14 randomized controlled trials (565 participants) comparing wearable lower-limb robotic exoskeleton gait training with control interventions after stroke. Pooled mean differences favored the exoskeleton groups on the Functional Ambulation Category (0.39, 95% CI 0.15 to 0.63, nine trials), Berg Balance Scale (1.66 points, 95% CI 0.52 to 2.81, eleven trials), Fugl-Meyer lower extremity score (2.40 points, 95% CI 1.63 to 3.16, eight trials) and 6-minute walk distance (19.83 m, 95% CI 2.21 to 37.45, six trials), while 10-meter walk time, Timed Up and Go and daily-living scores did not differ between groups. The authors list heterogeneous devices and training doses, mostly immediate post-intervention follow-up, and prediction intervals that crossed the null as limitations.
Why it matters. Clinicians weighing exoskeleton gait training have pooled effect sizes with the caveats spelled out, and manufacturers have a current list of the outcome measures reviewers pool.
Registration is open for Medtrade 2027, which runs March 23 to 25, 2027 in Fort Worth, Texas, the show's first time in that city. HME News reported on October 26, 2026 that the lowest rates, $65 for an expo pass and $235 for a full conference pass, run through November 20, with 70 education sessions across seven tracks and more than 300 exhibitors expected. Medtrade's registration site is taking 2027 registrations; its pricing page could not be opened on October 30, so the dollar figures come from HME News.
Why it matters. Providers and manufacturers planning the spring show calendar have three weeks to lock in the lowest rate.
